Today’s high-tech world means a more deliberate effort is needed to organize our affairs than previous generations. And having our affairs in order today means a lot more than having a will. Our lives today are almost entirely reliant on technology. From banking online and binge watching our favorite series to driving electric cars and following the latest TikTok trends, our world today is a digital one. And as financial advisors, we need to understand how today’s laws treat digital assets and digital accounts. In this session, you’ll not only learn why it’s imperative to encourage your clients to organize their affairs but also how technology is making it more challenging.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the complexities associated with modern-day estates, and why things like password managers are becoming a critical tool when it comes to handling someone’s finances and/or afterlife
  2. Learn how the law treats digital assets when someone passes – from crypto and NFTs to email and social media
  3. Know which online platform(s) offer settings to make it easy to legally designate someone to access your account upon your passing
  4. Recognize some additional considerations that financial advisors may want to consider when it comes to their own business and the unthinkable
