Traditional financial planning education does not always train financial planners in dealing with grief, recognizing signs of trust, and building greater financial transparency to facilitate the trusted conversations clients expect from their financial planner. Drawing on empirical research and practical field experience, the instructors will describe how to elicit information to have these deeper conversations. Participants will gain experience using the techniques provided in breakout groups and roleplays. Participants will receive real-time feedback from the instructors to help fine-tune their approach.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify characteristics of grief and how to modify communication to elicit positive outcomes for clients
  2. Recognize the difference between sympathy and empathy and understand how they interact with compassion and trust building
  3. Apply the skills necessary to allow clients to be financially vulnerable and understand how to overcome barriers to financial transparency
