In this presentation, advisors will learn nuanced elements of financial planning for military members. Topics covered will include the adjustment to the 121 capital gains exclusion, benefits available to military members deployed to a combat zone, student loan forgiveness for military members and disabled veterans, federally legislated benefits including SCRA, MSRRA, and spousal licensing portability, and the estate benefits for spouses of those who pass on AD provided by the Heart Act.

3 Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify and explain key financial benefits available to military members, including section 121 capital gains exclusion adjustments, combat zone tax exclusions, SCRA/MSRRA protections, student loan forgiveness programs, and HEART Act estate provisions.

  2. Analyze and compare different financial planning scenarios for military families, evaluating the appropriate use of deployment benefits, PCS planning strategies, and spousal licensing portability to determine optimal financial solutions for specific client situations.

  3. Create and justify comprehensive financial plans for military clients that integrate tax planning, estate planning, education funding, and deployment considerations, while evaluating the effectiveness of their recommendations against military-specific financial goals and constraints.
