NAPFA Internship Matching Program

NAPFA is helping to facilitate summer partnerships between students in CFP Board-Registered Programs and NAPFA-Registered Financial Advisors. Internships are mutually beneficial partnerships which allow advisors to tap into the best and brightest students to assist them with special projects or other tasks essential to running a firm, while offering mentorship opportunities for the next generation of fee-only financial planners.

Internship Format Opportunities

NAPFA is suggesting the four formats below as ways to stucture an internship. Final details are up to the advisor offering the internship, but the options below provide several potential frameworks. When filling out the application, you are asked to select which format you're interested in participating in.

Virtual Internship

This would be an intern hired on an ongoing basis for the summer. Most often this includes project work in administrative tasks or financial planning software and assisting with client service. This opportunity would take place virtually.

Onsite Internship

This would be an intern hired on an ongoing basis for the summer. Most often this includes project work in administrative tasks or financial planning software and assisting with client service. This opportunity would take place onsite in an office.

Externship

This would be a “day in the life” of an advisor opportunity and could be done in person or virtually. In addition to showing the student what a day in the life of a fee-only financial advisor looks like from a structure and task perspective, the advisor would provide mentorship about the fee-only financial planning profession for at least the day.

Project work

This would be a student simply completing a project for a firm or advisor. In the past, students have worked on projects calculating RMDs, and have also participated in projects that need to be completed in financial planning software, as most students are competent in this area. Mentorship would also be a key component of this opportunity, providing the student with an overview of an advisor's experiences in the fee-only financial planning profession.
