Additional Information

Personal Background

I was born and raised in Portland, Maine.  While I’ve spent the majority of my life in New York and New Jersey, I’m a New England Yankee by birth and temperament, with deep roots there:  My great-grandfather fought with the 20th Maine Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg.

That heritage informs the values and characteristics that I hold and bring to my work as a financial planner:  integrity, hard work, fairness, pragmatism, common sense.

Professional Background and Credentials

I’m a former CEO, now enjoying a second career as the founder and managing member of McGovern Financial Advisors.  I’m also an adjunct faculty member at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, where I teach several courses to professionals seeking the Certified Financial Planner™ certification, including retirement planning, investment planning, estate planning, and the Capstone class in financial plan development.

I hold a B.A. in English from Yale University and an MBA in Taxation from New York University.  I completed the Financial Planning Certificate Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where I now teach, and passed the rigorous Certified Financial Planner™ Examination administered by the CFP® Board.  I also passed the Series 65 Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination, and my firm is a Registered Investment Advisor in the State of New Jersey.

Before founding McGovern Financial Advisors, I enjoyed a 30-year career in professional law and tax publishing.
