Planning Specialties

As an American citizen who has resided outside of the United States, Stan can not only speak to the U.S. expatriate experience, he has also lived it. Stan is a member of Walkner Condon's team of financial advisors that work with U.S. expats, and his primary area of specialty is centered around Americans abroad in need of general financial planning, retirement planning, and investment management.

Stan has authored numerous articles and provided educational webinars on a variety of financial planning topics that have included cross-border estate planning, financial planning for mixed nationality couples, dividing retirement assets when divorcing abroad, cross-border philanthropy, and expatriation. Stan, who lived in Portugal, has also produced several pieces centered around moving, and living, in Portugal as an American. You can find one of those pieces here.

Additional Information

Stan grew up in Columbia, Missouri, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but has lived and worked all over the world, from Angola to Dubai to Lisbon. For the past seven years, Stan and his wife have called Middleton, Wisconsin, home. After starting his professional career as an attorney, Stan became a financial advisor in 2004, with the Minneapolis office of Merrill Lynch. After returning to the U.S., Stan joined Thun Financial in 2014, where he began to focus his advisory practice on providing financial planning and investment advice to U.S. expat clients all over the world. He started with Walkner Condon in Sept. 2020.

Stan is a graduate of Northwestern University, where he majored in Economics. He earned a master's degree in government administration (MGA) from the University of Pennsylvania before he matriculated at the University of Iowa, where he obtained a law degree (J.D.). Fluent in English and Portuguese, Stan enjoys taking care of his 100+ pets (African cichlids) and he is completely obsessed with cycling the many paved, gravel, and dirt trails that run throughout Wisconsin when the weather permits, and riding inside with Zwift and his stationary trainer when it doesn't.
