Blankinship & Foster, LLC is an independent, fee-only wealth management firm in sunny Solana Beach, California. We provide integrated financial planning and investment management to individuals and families. Residency Program Summary

The purpose of the Residency Program is to develop the next generation of financial planners and to add capacity within our existing client service, financial planning, and investment teams. Residents complete a robust full-time three-year program where they will rotate through various key departments within our firm, starting with client service, followed by financial planning and investment management. Our program is designed and intended for applicants who are actively working towards their CFP designation and are looking to meet the work experience requirement to qualify for the CFP® certification. At the conclusion of the program, the Resident can then apply for any open positions within the Firm or choose to pursue other opportunities outside of the Firm.

Job Responsibilities:

First 18 Months


Client Service Responsibilities:

  • Deliver exceptional client service and serve as a liaison between advisors and clients as needed
  • Serve as the main point of contact for custodians for cashiering, deposits and withdrawals, custodian alerts, and other client needs
  • Prepare and process account forms, execute asset transfers, and assist clients in completing firm and custodian paperwork
  • Manage client information – prepare client reports, submit and follow-up on firm and custodial processes
  • Assist with administrative duties, including scheduling appointments, scanning, copying, and printing reports

Financial Planning Responsibilities:

  • Prepare advisors for client meetings
  • Assist with creating client financial plans, including data entry and report preparation
  • Complete and/or assist advisor with client follow-up tasks
  • Assist with financial planning projects

Investment Management Responsibilities:

  • Process trades
  • Propose trades for regular rebalancing, cash needs and management fees

Next 18 Months


Financial Planning Responsibilities:

  • Participate in client meetings with advisors
  • Enter client meeting notes in customer relationship management software
  • Participate in financial planning department meetings
  • Complete financial planning projects
  • Same responsibilities from first 18 months

Investment Management Responsibilities:

  • Prepare client-specific investment reports
  • Assist with investment management projects
  • Maintain our portfolio management and rebalancing software
  • Same responsibilities from first 18 months
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Train new Resident
  • Help develop and improve the residency program

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Ability to work hybrid schedule (remote and onsite in our Solana Beach, CA, office)
  • A bachelor’s degree
  • Actively working towards their CFP designation and/or have one or more (1+) year of direct and relevant financial planning work experience (for example, preparing a balance sheet, or inputting data for retirement plans)
  • Mature, self-starter, willing to take complete ownership of responsibilities from start to finish
  • Personable, responsive, engaging
  • Highly organized with keen ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Attention to detail and good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently in a high energy dynamic environment, often on several simultaneous tasks for multiple parties
  • Team player, collaborative, able to work with others
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills including high degree of proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook and contact management databases (like Salesforce)
  • Quick learner with strong aptitude to learn and effectively utilize new software

Salary and Benefits:
