Kay co-founded the company in 1990 to create a firm dedicated to lasting, productive relationships with clients.  She is passionate about Sustainable, Responsible, Impact (SRI) investing and philanthropy.  Birchwood models this commitment to philanthropy by having volunteer activities for clients and staff, as well as having a policy that allows employees time off to volunteer for their community. 

Kay has presented seminars on a variety of topics for corporations and community organizations and has been quoted numerous times in the Star Tribune, the Minnesota Women's Press and City Business. Her current volunteer commitments include serving on the Board of Trustees of the Episcopal Divinity School and the finance and personnel committees of her parish, St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church.  Past volunteer commitments include: president of the Sheltering Arms Foundation, investment committee of the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota and a trustee of the Episcopal Church in Minnesota.
