As April 15th approaches, many taxpayers will turn to Turbo Tax or other software programs to file their 2009 income tax returns. The "Do It Yourself" approach has many advantages such as convenience and low cost, however there are significant drawbacks. Most tax software is only backward looking as its sole goal is to correctly report the taxable events which occurred last year.
We have seen significant changes to the tax code recently and more change is on the horizon. For this reason, it makes sense to work with a professional or financial advisor every few years to assist with planning your tax strategy for the future. Spending a little money for quality tax planning advice now may save you significant sums down the road.
